What Is An Exercise Physiologist

In Australia, Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are highly qualified allied health professionals who have completed a university degree. They are experts in designing and implementing personalized exercise programs for individuals with chronic medical conditions, injuries, or disabilities. AEP services are covered by Medicare and most private health insurance plans. When it comes to prescribing exercise, AEPs are the most qualified professionals in the country.

What are the differences between exercise physiologists and physiotherapists?

It can be challenging to differentiate between physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, as both are allied health professionals who have completed at least four years of university study.

However, while they both have a broad scope of practice and may work together as part of a healthcare team, they have different areas of expertise.

Exercise physiologists use evidence-based exercise interventions to prevent and manage chronic diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, and weight management.

On the other hand, physiotherapists are trained to diagnose a wide range of conditions and use various methods, including exercise, to treat musculoskeletal problems, reduce pain, restore function, and manage chronic conditions.
